Cane Toad Classic – Queensland’s very own Diplomacy Tournament – Coming August 2027

Next Cane Toad Classic

The Cane Toad Classic is being rested in 2026 and will be back bigger (well more than 5 boards will be hard to top!) and better in August 2027.

Ahh the memories…

Thanks to all players who attended the 2026 Cane Toad Classic which also served as the Asia Pacific Diplomacy Championship. You can watch the play-by-play blows at DBN’s GameDay Live – enjoy!

Here’s some background historical info if you’re interested about the weekend:

The Tournament

  • Round 1 – 9:30 am roll call for 10 am start Saturday 30 August
  • Round 2 – Approximate start 2:30/3 pm Saturday 30 August
  • Round 3 – 9:30 am roll call for a 10 am start Sunday 31 August
  • Trophies awarded mid afternoon Sunday 31 August (contact me if you have any concerns re: flight times back home)

We will use the Bangkok scoring system (used last year for the Cane Toad and in many tournaments in the Asia-Pacific). End times for each game is determined by the tournament director and will not be advised in advance to players.

What are you playing for?

Dignity? No.

Life long alliances? No.

Redemption for that Spring 1901 betrayal? Still no.

A super cool trophy? That’s what I’m talking about!

Cane Toad Classic trophyGold Toad, Silver Toad and Bronze Toad trophies for first, second and third place. Your score will be determined from across all three rounds.

Plus toad trophies for best country across the tournament.

We will also have a player nominated “Most Fun to Play With” award, and probably the most coveted award, the player nominated “Toadiest Toad” award.

What else is happening?

While we all love our favourite game, we also love a bit of socialising up here in Queensland (all events optional – just let me know which ones you are attending so I can book tables. If you don’t let me know, I can’t guarantee we’ll have dining space for you)

Friday night drinks

If you arrive on Friday 29 August (or are a local) come and grab some drinks at Saccharomyces Beer Cafe (Fish Lane, South Brisbane).

Saturday lunch

Between Round 1 and 2 there will be a lunch break. We all know the next World Diplomacy Championship (May 2026) is in Athens, so to get you in the mood we’ll be going to a taverna around the corner called Kafenio (8 Vulture Street, West End).

Saturday dinner

After Round 2 feel free to join us for drinks and dinner at The Burrow (52 Russell Street, West End). This is about a 10 minute walk.

Sunday lunch

There will be a short lunch break during Round 3. Either grab something from the Meeple and Mug kitchen or go to another place close by. Just don’t bring food and drink from somewhere else back to Meeple and Mug.

Any questions please email amby@diplomacygames.com.

We will also be running a WhatsApp group for the tournament so please provide your mobile number so you can be kept informed about the latest updates.
